Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library have teamed up with the Wheatley Group (Picture: Mario Anzuoni/Reuters)Children in Scotland have received more than 25,000 free books thanks to country music legend star Dolly Parton.
The 9 to 5 icon, 77, has teamed up with Scottish housing organisation The Wheatley Group to help children develop their reading skills.
In 1995, Dolly formed the Imagination Library, which allows children under five to be sent books free of charge every month until their fifth birthday.
The books are available to tenants of Wheatley Group homes across Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the county of Dumfries & Galloway.
On National Reading Day, January 23 in the UK, the Wheatley Foundation announced that over 1,000 children have signed up for the scheme.
Wheatley Foundation chairman Professor Paddy Gray said: ‘The Imagination Library is a great way of introducing toddlers to the joys of reading.’

‘We have already distributed 25,000 books to children across Wheatley communities,’ said a proud Prof. Gray.
Lyndsay Calderwood, a resident of Stranraer, in Dumfries & Galloway, signed up her three-year-old son Alfie to the scheme 12 months ago.

She continued: ‘It’s great to get a new story delivered every month. Alfie loves reading as it is, but a new book really prompts him to read.’
‘The Imagination Library is a great service. New books can be expensive, so this can be beneficial for lots of families and their children.’
The flagship programme of Dolly’s charity, The Dollywood Foundation, has gifted over 200 million free books in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Ireland.
