The Showtime Lakers star was signed to Converse at the time, but he was also a top draft prospect and expected to be an NBA star. “Boy, did I make a mistake,” Johnson would later reveal to Inc., adding that Nike offered him stock options at the time that would have been worth around $1 billion today while Converse offered him cash. Trying again in 1984, Nike would land Michael Jordan right after he was drafted third overall by the Chicago Bulls. They signed him to five-year, $2.5 million deal—and the rest is history.
